On February 14, 2003, Blizzard announced the first beta test for the game, which offered 10,000 players to sample the game. On March 10, 2003, 10,000 more players were selected to participate in the beta test. After years of watching pro replays, I finally found JUST ONE pro replay in which somebody trained a Dark Ranger with Life Drain. Now, for a Dark Ranger 1st or 2nd, the reasons for wanting Black Arrow and Silence are obvious, but for a 3rd hero (which you do find the Dark Ranger being reasonably often), Life Drain would seem to be a logical choice, especially when you are up against an Undead. Dark rangers are rangers who died and were raised as undead, currently only the forsaken have dark rangers as the elite guards/agents of Sylvanas. A ranger would be a more likely candidate but even that theme is currently filled by marksman hunters.

All races (The Undead, Night Elves, Humans, Orcs) have one more Hero (Crypt Lord, Warden, Bloodmage, and Shadow Hunter). Moreover, there is the Tavern in most new maps. Players can hire neutral heroes from there. There is the Beastmaster, Dark Ranger, Firelord, Goblin Tinker, Goblin Alchemist, Naga Sea Witch, Pandaren Brewmaster, and Pit Lord.

• Ancient of Wonders, which is the shop of the Night Elves, sells Moonstone, Lesser Clarity Potion, Dust of Appearance, Potion of Healing, Potion of Mana Scroll of Tonw Portal, Staff of Preservation, Orb of Venom, Anti-Magic Potion.
• Arcane Vault, which is the shop of Humans, sells Scroll of Regeneration, Mechanical Critter, Lesser Clarity Potion, Potion of Healing, Potion of Mana Scroll of Tonw Portal, Ivory Tower, Orb of Fire, Staff of Sanctuary.
• Voodoo Lounge, which is the shop of the Orcs, sells Healing Selves, Lesser Clarity Potion, Speed Scroll, Potion of Healing, Potion of Mana Scroll of Tonw Portal, Tiny Great Hall, and Lighting Orb.

All races have new units. The Undead now have Obsidian Statue, Destroyer, Skeletal Mage, and Carrion Beetle for their new armies. The Night Elves acquire Mountain Giant, Faerie Dragon, Avatar of Vengeance, and Sprit of Vengeance for their new armies. The Humans acquire Spell Breaker, Dragonhawk Rider, and Phoenix for their new armies. The Orcs acquire Berserker, Spirit Walker, and Troll Batrider for their new armies.

Upkeep System takes the form of a tax on player's Gold mining that is automatically deducted from all Gold players get. The upper limit of this system is increased. Low Upkeep becomes 50 from 40. High Upkeep becomes 80 from 70.

The costs of all units and buildings are reduced in price.
